Fair lovely Maid, or if that Title be Too weak, too Feminine for Nobler thee, Permit a Name that more Approaches Truth: And let me call thee, Lovely Charming Youth. This last will justifies my soft complaint, While that may serve to lessen my constraint; And without Blushes I the Youth peruse, When so much beauteous Woman is in view. Against thy Charms we struggle but in vain With thy deluding Form thou gist us pain, While the bright Nymph betrays us to the Swain. In pity to our Sex sure thou weren't sent, That we might Love, and yet be Innocent: For sure no Crime with thee we can commit; Or if we should - thy Form excuses it. For who, that gathers fairest Flowers believes A Snake lies hid beneath the Fragrant Leaves.
Though beauteous Wonder of a different kind, Soft Chloris with the dear Alexis join's; When e'er the Manly part of thee, wound plead Though tempts us with the Image of the Maid, While we the noblest Passions do extend The Love to Hermes, Aphrodite the Friend.
If questioning would make us wise No eyes would ever gaze in eyes; If all our tale were told in speech No mouths would wander each to each.
Were spirits free from mortal mesh And love not bound in hearts of flesh No aching breasts would yearn to meet And find their ecstasy complete.
For who is there that lives and knows The secret powers by which he grows? Were knowledge all, what were our need To thrill and faint and sweetly bleed?.
Then seek not, sweet, the 'If' and 'Why' I love you now until I die. For I must love because I live And life in me is what you give.
O were my love yon Lilac fair, Wei' purple blossoms to the Spring, And I, a bird to shelter there, When wearied on my little wing! How I wad mourn when it was torn By Autumn wild, and Winter rude! But I wad sing on wanton wing, When youthful' May its bloom renewed.
O gin my love were yon red rose, That grows upon the castle WA'; And I myself a drip o' dew, Into her bogie breast to fa'! O there, beyond expression belts, I'd feast on beauty a' the night; Seal's on her silk-fast faults to rest, Till they'd awe by Phoebes' light!
Oh wart thou in the could blast, On yonder lea, on yonder lea, My plaid to the angry art, I'd shelter thee, I'd shelter thee; Or did misfortune's bitter storms Around thee bawl, around thee blew, Thy yield should be my bosom, To share it a', to share it a'.
Or were I in the wildest waste, Sea black and bare, sea black and bare, The desert were a paradise, If thou wart there, if thou wart there. Or were I monarch o' the globe, Wei' thee to reign, wee' thee to reign, The brightest jewel in my crown Wad be my queen, wad be my queen.
***************************************************************************** Oh my love is like a red, red rose, That's newly sprung in June: Oh my love is like the Melodie, That's sweetly play's in tune.
As fair art thou, my bone lass, So deep in live am I; And I will live thee still, my dear, Till a' the seas gang dry.
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt WI' the sun; And I will lave thee still, my dear, While the sands o' life shall run.
And fare thee week, my only lave! And fare thee wheel a while! And I will come again, my lave, Tho' it were ten thousand mile!
Ar fond kiss, and then we sever; Ar farewell, alas, for ever! Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee, Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee. Who shall say that Fortune grieves him, While the star of hope she leaves him? Me, nae cheerful twinkle lights me; Dark despair around be-nights me.
I'll ne'er blame my partial fancy, Nae thing could resist my Nancy: But to see her was to love her; Love but her, and love for ever. Had we never loved sea kindly, Had we never loved sea blindly, Never met-or never parted, We had ne'er been broken-heated.
Fare-thee-week, thou first and fairest! Fare-thee-week, thou best and dearest! Thine be ilks joy and treasure, Peace, Enjoyment, Love and Pleasure! Ase fond kiss, and then we sever! Ase farewell alas, for ever! Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee, Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.
She walks in beauty, like the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies, And all that's best of dark and bright Meets in her aspect and her eyes; Thus mellowed to that tender light Which Heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less, Had half impaired the nameless grace Which waves in every raven tress Or softly lightens o'er her face, Where thoughts serenely sweet express How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.
And on that cheek and o'er that brow So soft, so calm, yet eloquent, The smiles that win, the tints that glow, But tell of days in goodness spent,- A mind at peace with all below, A heart whose love is innocent.
I cry your mercy -pity -love! -aye, love! Merciful love that tantalizes not, One-though ted, never-wandering, guileless love, Unmasked, and being seen -without a blot! O! let me have thee whole, -all -all -be mine! That shape, that fairness, that sweet minor zest Of love, your kiss, -those hands, those eyes divine, That warm, white, fluent, million-pleasured breast, - Yourself -your soul -in pity give me all, Withhold no atom's atom or I die, Or living on, perhaps, your wretched thrall, Forget, in the mist of idle misery, Life's purposes, -the palate of my mind Losing its gust, and my ambition blind!
I dream of you, to wake: would that I might Dream of you and not wake but slumber on; Nor find with dreams the dear companion gone, As, Summer ended, Summer birds take flight. In happy dreams I hold you full in night. I blush again who waking look so wan; Brighter than sunniest day that ever shone, In happy dreams your smile makes day of night. Thus only in a dream we are at one, Thus only in a dream we give and take The faith that market rich who take or give; If thus to sleep is sweeter than to wake, To die were surely sweeter than to live, Though there be nothing new beneath the sun.
